ألا تشعرون أحياناً بأننا، كبشر، نبحث عن الجمال في كل مكان، لكننا نتهرب من الحقيقة، خاصةً إذا كانت غير مريحة؟ عندما تلوح لنا صور شواطئ زنجبار الفيروزية، ورائحة التوابل العبقة، وأزقة "المدينة الحجرية" التي تحكي قصصاً من ألف ليلة وليلة، هل نبحث حقاً عن "تاريخنا المشترك" كما يقال، أم عن صورة مصقولة تريح العين وتغفل العقل؟ دعونا نكن صرحاء للحظة.
السؤال الذي يتجنّبه الجميع
عندما نتحدث عن "التاريخ المشترك" في مكان مثل زنجبار، ونبتهج بالمعمار العربي-السواحيلي وأبوابه المنحوتة، هل نتذكر تاريخاً كاملاً أم نختار منه ما يروق لنا؟ من منا يجرؤ على التفكير في أن هذه الجزر الساحرة، التي كانت يوماً مركزاً تجارياً عالمياً للتوابل، كانت أيضاً مركزاً رئيسياً لتجارة الرقيق؟ وأن "تاريخنا المشترك" هناك لا يقتصر على المجد والرخاء، بل يمتد إلى فصول مظلمة من الاستعباد الذي شارك فيه العرب وغيرهم؟ هل نحتفل فقط بالجانب الذي يرضي غرورنا التاريخي، ونغفل الجانب الذي يثير تساؤلات أخلاقية عميقة حول موروثنا؟ هذا هو السؤال الذي يتجنبه الكثيرون، وينفضون عنه الغبار بفرشاة السياحة اللامعة.
وجهان لعملة واحدة
دعونا نعترف بأن هناك وجهين لهذه العملة. الوجه الأول، هو ما تقدمه لنا وكالات السفر والمنشورات البراقة: جنة استوائية بامتياز، شواطئ تخطف الأنفاس، غوص في شعاب مرجانية مدهشة، فنادق فاخرة، وتراث معماري يفوح منه عبق الأصالة. هذا الوجه يدعونا للاسترخاء، والهروب من ضجيج الحياة، والاستمتاع بتجربة ثقافية سطحية لكنها ممتعة. إنه الوجه الذي يجعلنا نشعر بالفخر بـ"الحضارة" التي تركت بصمتها هناك. أما الوجه الآخر، فهو أكثر تعقيداً وأقل بريقاً. إنه يتحدث عن التناقض الصارخ بين المنتجعات الفاخرة وحياة السكان المحليين، عن تآكل الهوية المحلية أمام متطلبات السياحة العالمية، وعن استغلال التاريخ نفسه كسلعة تُباع وتُشترى. هل نحن، كزوار، نساهم في هذا التجميل الانتقائي للتاريخ، أم نسعى لفهم أعمق وأكثر شمولية؟ هل نرى بعينين سياحيتين فقط، أم بعينين إنسانيتين؟
ماذا لو كنّا صرحاء؟
ماذا لو اعترفنا بأن جزءاً كبيراً من بحثنا عن "التاريخ المشترك" في وجهات مثل زنجبار هو في الحقيقة بحث عن نسخة رومانسية، خالية من التعقيدات والآلام؟ ماذا لو أقررنا بأننا نفضل رؤية الأبواب الخشبية المزخرفة على التفكير في أيدي من صنعتها تحت أي ظروف؟ لو كنا صرحاء حقاً، لربما أدركنا أن السياحة، في أفضل أحوالها، يمكن أن تكون جسراً للتفاهم والتبادل، وفي أسوأ أحوالها، قد تكون أداة لتجميل الحقائق وطمس الجوانب المظلمة من التاريخ، وتحويل الثقافة إلى مجرد ديكور خلفي لصور العطلات. هل نجرؤ على الاعتراف بأننا أحياناً نشتري "التجربة" دون أن نتحمل "الحقيقة"؟
خاتمة استفزازية
بعد كل ما قيل، هل سنظل نرى زنجبار مجرد وجهة سياحية خلابة أم سنبدأ في التساؤل عن الطبقات الخفية التي تحملها هذه الجزر في طياتها؟ هل تظنون أن الاعتراف بالتاريخ كاملاً، بمرّه وحلوه، سيقلل من جمال التجربة أم سيزيدها عمقاً وإنسانية؟ والأهم من ذلك، ما هو واجبنا كمسافرين تجاه الأماكن التي نزورها وتاريخها المعقد؟ دعونا نتناقش بصراحة في التعليقات.

Don't you sometimes feel that we, as humans, seek beauty everywhere, yet shy away from truth, especially if it's uncomfortable? When images of Zanzibar's turquoise beaches, the rich aroma of its spices, and the alleyways of Stone Town—whispering tales from a thousand and one nights—beckon us, are we truly seeking our "shared history" as advertised, or a polished, visually pleasing version that spares our minds from deeper thought? Let's be frank for a moment.
The Question Everyone Avoids
When we speak of "shared history" in a place like Zanzibar, and marvel at the Arab-Swahili architecture and its carved doors, are we recalling a complete history or selectively choosing what pleases us? Who among us dares to consider that these enchanting islands, once a global trade hub for spices, were also a major center for the slave trade? That our "shared history" there isn't solely about glory and prosperity, but extends to dark chapters of enslavement in which Arabs and others participated? Do we only celebrate the aspect that flatters our historical ego, overlooking the part that raises profound ethical questions about our legacy? This is the question many avoid, brushing it away with the shiny veneer of tourism.
Two Sides of the Same Coin
Let's acknowledge that there are two sides to this coin. The first side is what travel agencies and glossy brochures present: a tropical paradise par excellence, breathtaking beaches, diving in stunning coral reefs, luxurious hotels, and an architectural heritage exuding authenticity. This side invites us to relax, escape life's hustle, and enjoy a superficial yet enjoyable cultural experience. It's the side that makes us proud of the "civilization" that left its mark there. The other side, however, is more complex and less glamorous. It speaks of the stark contrast between luxury resorts and the lives of local residents, of the erosion of local identity in the face of global tourism demands, and of the commodification of history itself, bought and sold as a commodity. Are we, as visitors, contributing to this selective beautification of history, or do we strive for a deeper, more comprehensive understanding? Do we see with tourist eyes only, or with human eyes?
What If We Were Frank?
What if we admitted that a significant part of our search for "shared history" in destinations like Zanzibar is, in fact, a search for a romanticized version, free from complexities and pain? What if we conceded that we prefer to see ornate wooden doors rather than contemplate the hands that crafted them under what conditions? If we were truly frank, perhaps we would realize that tourism, at its best, can be a bridge for understanding and exchange, but at its worst, it can be a tool for embellishing truths, obscuring the darker aspects of history, and turning culture into mere background decor for holiday photos. Do we dare to admit that we sometimes buy the "experience" without bearing the "truth"?
Provocative Conclusion
After all that has been said, will we continue to see Zanzibar merely as a beautiful tourist destination, or will we begin to question the hidden layers these islands carry within them?
