كلما ذكر اسم هولاكو، يقفز إلى أذهاننا فوراً صورة التتري الهمجي، محطّم الحضارات، قاتل بغداد. لكن دعنا نتوقف لحظة، هل هذه هي الصورة الكاملة حقاً؟ هل الصورة التي ورثناها من كتب التاريخ، والتي رسخت في وجداننا، هي الصورة الوحيدة؟ أم أننا نفضل الرواية المريحة التي تُلقي باللوم كله على "الآخر"؟
السؤال الذي يتجنّبه الجميع
السؤال الحقيقي الذي يتجنّبه الكثيرون، خوفاً من وخز الضمير وربما من إعادة تقييم تاريخنا، هو: هل كان هولاكو مجرد قوة خارجية عابرة، أم أنه جاء ليقضي على واقع كان يحتضر بالفعل؟ هل كانت بغداد التي سقطت في 1258 هي نفسها بغداد التي كانت منارة الدنيا؟ أم أن قروناً من الصراعات الداخلية، والترهل السياسي، والجمود الفكري، قد أعدت لها الفراش لتسقط في قبضة أي يد قوية؟ ألا نشعر أحياناً أننا نبالغ في تمجيد الماضي لنغطي على عيوب الحاضر، ونلصق كل أخطائنا بشماعة "الغزاة"؟ دعنا نكون صرحاء: هل سقوط بغداد كان نتيجة حتمية لتدهور داخلي أم أنه كان صاعقة من السماء لا ذنب لنا فيها؟
وجهان لعملة واحدة
لنكن صرحاء: هولاكو هو بلا شك رمز للدمار والوحشية التي لا تُنسى. من منّا لم يقرأ عن دجلة التي جرت سوداء بالحبر وحمراء بالدماء؟ عن مكتبة بيت الحكمة التي تحولت إلى رماد؟ هذا وجه لا يمكن إنكاره، ويستحق كل الشجب. لكن هل هذا هو كل ما في القصة؟ ألم يؤسس هذا "الهمجي" دولة الإلخانات، التي حكمت أجزاء واسعة من المنطقة لقرون؟ دولة استقرت، وتطورت، وشهدت لاحقاً تعايشاً وتفاعلاً ثقافياً بين الغزاة والسكان الأصليين، حتى اعتنق بعض أحفاده الإسلام؟ ألا يمثل هذا التناقض الصارخ حقيقة أن التاريخ ليس أبيض وأسود، وأن من يهدم قد يبني، ومن يدمر قد يمهد لطريق جديد، حتى لو كان ثمنه باهظاً؟ كيف يمكننا أن نفصل بين الدمار الفظيع والإنجاز السياسي الذي تلاه؟ وأي الجانبين يستحق منا وقفة أطول للتأمل؟
ماذا لو كنّا صرحاء؟
ماذا لو كنّا صرحاء مع أنفسنا واعترفنا أن سقوط بغداد لم يكن مجرد كارثة عسكرية، بل كان تتويجاً لانهيار داخلي بدأ قبل ذلك بكثير؟ ماذا لو اعترفنا أن الخلافة العباسية في ذلك الوقت كانت مجرد هيكل عظمي بلا روح، يعج بالصراعات على السلطة، والانقسامات المذهبية، والتخلف عن ركب التطور الحقيقي؟ ألا يدفعنا هذا الاعتراف الصعب إلى التفكير في مسؤوليتنا نحن عن مصائرنا، بدلاً من إلقاء اللوم كله على القوى الخارجية؟ هل حقاً نخشى أن نواجه حقيقة أن الحضارات لا تسقط فقط بضربة عدو خارجي، بل بتمزقها من الداخل أولاً؟ لنسأل أنفسنا بصدق: لو لم يكن هناك هولاكو، هل كانت بغداد ستستعيد مجدها أم أن مصيرها كان التلاشي تدريجياً؟
خاتمة استفزازية
في نهاية المطاف، هل ما زلنا نرى هولاكو مجرد شيطان تاريخي، أم أننا مستعدون للنظر في مرآة التاريخ لنرى انعكاسات أخطائنا؟ هل التاريخ مجرد سرد لأحداث انتهت، أم أنه درس مستمر يجب أن نتعلم منه اليوم؟ والأهم من ذلك كله: هل نحن، كأمة، مستعدون اليوم لمواجهة هولاكو العصر الحديث، سواء كان من الخارج أو من الداخل، بنفس الطريقة التي واجهناه بها بالأمس، أم أننا تعلمنا شيئاً؟ شاركونا آراءكم بصراحة تامة.
Hulagu Khan: More Than Just a Destroyer? A Frank Reckoning.
The name Hulagu Khan immediately conjures images of a barbaric Mongol conqueror, the destroyer of civilizations, and the architect of Baghdad's downfall. But is this the complete picture we should carry? Or do we often prefer a comforting narrative that places all blame squarely on the "other," avoiding a deeper, perhaps uncomfortable, introspection into our own history?
The real question, often sidestepped due to the discomfort it provokes, is whether Hulagu was merely an external force or if he arrived to dismantle a reality already on the brink of collapse. Was the Baghdad that fell in 1258 truly the radiant beacon it once was, or had centuries of internal strife, political decay, and intellectual stagnation already paved its way for any powerful hand to claim? We often glorify the past to mask present shortcomings, attributing all our misfortunes to "invaders." Let's be frank: was Baghdad's fall an inevitable consequence of internal decline, or was it an unforeseeable lightning strike from the heavens for which we bear no responsibility?
Undoubtedly, Hulagu symbolizes an unforgettable era of destruction and brutality. Who among us hasn't read about the Tigris flowing black with ink and red with blood, or the House of Wisdom reduced to ashes? This is an undeniable aspect of his legacy, deserving of all condemnation. Yet, is this the entire narrative? Did this "barbarian" not also found the Ilkhanate, a state that governed vast regions for centuries? A state that stabilized, developed, and later witnessed cultural interaction and coexistence between conquerors and indigenous populations, with some of his descendants even embracing Islam. Does this stark contradiction not highlight the truth that history is rarely black and white, and that destroyers can sometimes build, paving the way for new orders, however steep the cost? How can we reconcile the horrific destruction with the political achievement that followed?
What if we were truly honest with ourselves and admitted that Baghdad's fall was not merely a military catastrophe, but the culmination of an internal collapse that began much earlier? What if we acknowledged that the Abbasid Caliphate at that time was merely a skeletal structure devoid of spirit, rife with power struggles, sectarian divisions, and lagging behind true progress? Shouldn't this difficult admission compel us to consider our own responsibility for our destinies, rather than solely blaming external forces? Do we genuinely fear confronting the truth that civilizations don't just fall to external enemies, but often disintegrate from within first?
Ultimately, do we still see Hulagu as merely a historical devil, or are we prepared to look into the mirror of history to see reflections of our own failings? Is history merely a chronicle of past events, or an ongoing lesson we must learn from today? Most importantly: are we, as a nation, prepared to confront the Hulagus of the modern era, whether external or internal, in the same manner we faced him yesterday, or have we learned anything?
